SBD: We Have a Filesystem at Home

What HN thinks

A post about block devices, a thread about whether a robot wrote it, and one firm defence of homemade ravioli.

Post reads as LLM-written
The top thread argues the fly.io post has lost its human voice and shows LLM-style phrasing; others push back that AI-spotting comments are tiresome and often wrong.
Back to ext4 on a block device
Several note the irony that the novel design ends up as ext4 over NBD, and that most infrastructure should stay boring while fly.io is an edge case.
Questionable design or reinvention
Some doubt that mapping a filesystem onto object storage was the right tradeoff, or see SBD as a more proprietary version of existing tools.

Consensus: There is no real consensus. The thread splits between complaints about AI-sounding prose and skepticism about the storage design itself.

Recommended in the comments

ublk ↗ (library): Suggested as a zero-copy, uring-based fit for fly.io's userspace block device use case.
ZeroFS (tool): Named as an existing alternative to SBD.
Archil (service): Named as an existing alternative to SBD.
