New iMac with M6

What HN thinks

Everyone agrees the iMac is beautiful; half the thread wants to keep using it as a monitor long after Apple stops caring.

Why not Mac mini plus monitor
Critics say the iMac costs about $800 more than an equivalent Mac mini, and that a separate monitor and peripherals would be better value.
All-in-one design is the point
Defenders argue that non-technical users, families, receptions and schools pay for simplicity, looks, one cable, a built-in camera and speakers, and a high-PPI display.
Short support life wastes hardware
Owners of old iMacs lament the roughly 7-year software window and the loss of Target Display Mode, and turn to Linux or third-party display tools.

Consensus: Most agree the iMac targets non-technical buyers who value its integrated design, and that losing Target Display Mode limits the machine's long-term usefulness.
