Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer

What HN thinks

A $699 printer, a $79 tank, a $199 washer, and a lifetime supply of nitrile gloves.

Just buy an FDM printer
Many argue resin printing is messy, toxic and post-processing heavy, so most hobbyists, especially beginners, should stick with FDM, perhaps with a 0.2mm nozzle.
Proprietary upsell concerns
Critics see cartridges, non-replaceable tank films and the $79 tank for Open Material Mode as printer-ink-style lock-in, while defenders note third-party resin is supported and the wash/cure is $199.
Resin is essential for some niches
Miniatures, jewelry, dental work and high-detail or engineering-material prototypes need resin, and the Studio 1 is seen as fast, safer and well priced for that.

Consensus: Most agree resin printing demands PPE, ventilation and tedious washing and curing, so it only makes sense if you actually need the detail or materials.

Recommended in the comments

UVtools (tool): Used with PrusaSlicer to run an Elegoo resin printer without proprietary lock-in.
PrusaSlicer (tool): Lets users avoid the Chitubox ecosystem on Chinese resin printers.
Snapmaker U1 (product): Recommended as a much easier multicolor alternative after giving up on resin.
