StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month

A Stack Exchange Data Explorer SQL query counting Stack Overflow questions per month, returning 220 monthly rows with a graph view.

What HN thinks

A wake where everyone agrees the patient is dead and argues only over whether the moderators or ChatGPT held the pillow.

Decline predates AI
Question counts were falling since 2014–2017, well before ChatGPT; hostile moderation, aggressive duplicate-closing and gamified gatekeeping drove contributors and askers away.
AI killed it outright
Regardless of culture, LLMs answer programming questions instantly and without judgment, making a Q&A site like SO obsolete.
Static model, outdated answers
The one-question-one-accepted-answer design and no-duplicates policy froze answers in time, so content grew stale as software changed; some add that common questions were simply exhausted.

Consensus: Most agree SO was already declining before ChatGPT and that AI delivered the final blow; the dispute is over how much weight each factor deserves.

cppreference (service): Cited as a reliable reference used alongside LLMs instead of SO.
