The first wired XR glasses powered by Android XR

More from blog.google →

Google blog post announcing XREAL AURA, the first wired XR glasses running Android XR with Gemini, now available to order starting at $1,099.

What HN thinks

Cool glasses, $1099, and a Google logo — the graveyard plot is already being measured.

Phone or dumb glasses suffice
Many argue existing Xreal glasses with a phone (Samsung DeX) or a plain DP Alt Mode display already cover the use case, making the pricey compute puck pointless.
Google will abandon it
Commenters cite Glass, Cardboard and Daydream and expect the product to be killed, though some defend Meta's VR support record by comparison.
Specs and marketing fall short
FOV, resolution and additive see-through displays limit productivity, and the AI-heavy marketing feels detached from real computer work.

Consensus: Most like the idea of glasses as a portable monitor but doubt this $1099 puck-based product is worth it, especially from Google.

Recommended in the comments

XREAL Air 2 Ultra (product): Shows up on Linux as a normal display with cameras and sensors over one cable, great for hacking.
XREAL One Pro (product): Offers most of the Aura's features at a much lower price without the puck.
Simula ↗ (product): Runs real Linux desktop apps instead of Android apps.
Steam Frame (product): Reportedly runs desktop Linux apps well at a similar price.
WayVR (tool): Makes a Quest 3 usable as multiple Linux monitors for coding.
