GitHub Incident with Actions, Pages, and Webhooks

What HN thinks

Another day ending in 'y', another GitHub status page that stays cheerfully green.

Outages are now routine
Many commenters treat GitHub incidents as a running joke, noting how often they recur and that the status page's uptime bar still shows green during an acknowledged incident.
Free CI is straining capacity
Some argue that cutting back free Actions, rate-limiting heavy free users or separating free-tier from paid infrastructure would fix reliability. Others say free CI is the freemium hook that draws users to GitHub in the first place.
Self-host to escape
Several users report near-zero downtime after moving to self-hosted Forgejo, Gitea or GitLab CE, or to their own self-hosted runners.

Consensus: Most agree GitHub's reliability has become poor and predictable. Self-hosting or alternative runners are the practical hedge.

Recommended in the comments

Forgejo (tool): Users who switched to it report almost no outages beyond their own maintenance.
GitLab CE (tool): One commenter runs it reliably on a 10-year-old server and likes its CI.
Blacksmith (service): A commenter says it cut their CI times by about 4x and only needed an app install plus an image tag change.
Tangled ↗ (service): Raised as an alternative forge, including for simple projects on a home server.
superci ↗ (tool): Its author says their runners kept working through the outage.
Wrangler (tool): It deploys a static site with a single command from any CI, avoiding a dependency on GitHub.
