HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN

What HN thinks

A room full of people relieved to find a YouTube that doesn't try to sell them a Korean face mask via ten-minute pop ballad.

Refreshing escape from engagement algorithms
Many found browsing HN-curated videos far more pleasant than YouTube's feed, blaming engagement-optimized recommendations and clickbait for degrading the experience.
Take control of your own feed
Others shared ways to tame YouTube themselves: ad blockers, alternate clients, disabling history, RSS subscriptions, and extensions that strip recommendations.
Feature requests and vibe-coding curiosity
Commenters asked for recency sorting, playlists, fresher data and TV apps, and were curious how Karpathy built it entirely with Claude Opus and what it cost.

Consensus: Most agree the curated, unpersonalized collection beats YouTube's algorithmic feed, which they see as optimized for watch time rather than what viewers actually want.

Recommended in the comments

SponsorBlock ↗ (tool): Suggested for skipping in-video sponsor reads and as an integration for the site.
DeArrow ↗ (tool): Recommended for removing clickbait titles and thumbnails, though one user found its titles unreliable.
uBlock Origin (tool): Paired with Firefox to watch YouTube without ads.
NewPipe (tool): Recommended for ad-free YouTube on phones, alongside SmartTube for TVs.
Cathode ↗ (tool): Its author offered it as a distraction-free YouTube front end.
Grayjay (tool): Used to view only subscriptions without a recommendation home page.
