Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes

More from visitnorway.com →

Visit Norway tourism article showcasing architect-designed public restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes, such as Stegastein, Ureddplassen and Eggum.

What HN thinks

A nation responds to being called a shithouse by publishing a brochure of its finest ones, and HN argues about oil money and the meaning of 'Scandinavia'.

Brilliant PR jab at Trump
Most enjoyed Norway's tourism site answering Trump's 'shithouse country' insult with architecturally stunning scenic-route restrooms, and several said it made them want to visit.
It's oil money, not virtue
A long subthread debated whether Norway's lavish public works come from oil luck or from policy choices like taxing and nationalising resource wealth into a sovereign fund.
American restrooms are worse
Many compared these to grim North American rest stops, while others pointed out that mainland Europe isn't much better and that Japan has excellent toilet density.

Consensus: Commenters broadly agree the restrooms are beautiful and the jab was well played. Whether Norway's wealth is luck or good governance stayed contested.

Recommended in the comments

Perfect Days (other): Several commenters called it a favourite film and a lovely look at Japan's designer public toilets.
The Tokyo Toilet ↗ (other): Suggested as a tour to do after watching Perfect Days.
Buc-ee's ↗ (service): Offered as an example of good US roadside restrooms.
