Active incident at Dreamhost forcing password reset

More from dreamhoststatus.com →

DreamHost status page detailing an active incident affecting File Manager and Webmail, with precautionary password resets for email and FTP/SFTP users.

What HN thinks

A twenty-year reunion of web hosting veterans, held in the password reset queue.

Time to finally migrate off
Long-time customers say the incident is the push to move their remaining sites, citing slow panels, dropped mailing lists and a company that has changed.
Poor communication from Dreamhost
Users complain about vague status updates, emails arriving hours late, and password 'expiry' notices for passwords that still worked.
Likely a compromised web FTP client
Commenters speculate the Monsta FTP-based file manager was hit by a recent PHP vulnerability and captured plaintext credentials at login.

Consensus: Most agree Dreamhost's messaging was unclear and slow, and that rotating passwords is wise. They are split on whether the host is still worth staying with.

Recommended in the comments

Hetzner (service): Cited as cheaper than Dreamhost, though one commenter warned it may drop controversial customers.
Porkbun (service): A former Dreamhost user said it has worked fine since switching.
Topicbox (service): Suggested as a replacement now that Dreamhost no longer runs mailing lists.
