Reviewers rarely talk about reliability. Owners bring it up twice as often

What HN thinks

Everyone agrees you can't review a car's alternator failure during a 30-minute test drive, then spends 40 comments on headlight bulbs.

Reviewers simply lack the time
Reliability only shows up after months or years, so launch-day reviewers can't assess it; the finding is unsurprising.
Owner negativity is selection bias
Unhappy owners are more likely to post, so the owner-vs-reviewer gap partly reflects reverse survivorship bias rather than truth.
Review economy is compromised
Free units, sponsorships, AI-generated reviews and the need for constant new content push reviewers toward novelty and positivity over long-term honesty.

Consensus: Most agree long-term reliability data is rare and valuable, and that buying proven older designs or reading long-term reviews beats trusting launch reviews.

Recommended in the comments

Backblaze Drive Stats ↗ (service): Cited as a model of the real-world reliability data people wish existed for other products.
Speed Queen TR7 (product): Praised as a dumb, serviceable, built-to-last washer, though some owners reported dryer problems from the brand.
ReDriven (other): Focuses on long-term reliability and known mechanical problems of used cars.
Choice (service): Mentioned as doing thorough, in-depth independent reviews.
Consumentenbond (service): Given as an example of subscriber-funded honest reviewing.
