With 86% of the words, you might understand only 38% of an anime's lines

A data analysis showing that knowing the most common words in eight anime yields high word coverage but far fewer fully understood subtitle lines.

What HN thinks

Commenters knew most of the words in the article and still argued about what it meant.

Context fills the gaps
Many say word counts ignore context, visuals, kanji compounds and redundancy, which let learners and viewers infer meaning without knowing every word.
Grammar and rare words matter
Others note that grammar and rare, information-heavy words can block understanding even when common words are known, which fits the article's point.
Anime is opaque anyway
Jokes about Lain and Evangelion being incomprehensible even with full subtitles, plus side debates on dubs vs subs and fansub notes.

Consensus: Most agree that word coverage overstates comprehension. Many also think the article undersells how much context helps, and several felt the piece read like LLM-written marketing.
